Who am I?

"Who am I?" has an existential ring to it, which my 17-year-old self tried to answer but failed miserably.

I believe that we all wear different masks for different occasions. We have a mask that we wear when we are at work, a mask that we wear when we are with family, a mask that we wear when we are in public and a mask that we wear when we are with our close friends and partner. However, which one of those masks is our unique self? Is it possible that all the different masks as a whole are ourselves?

I will try to be my most authentic self when I share my thoughts and feelings, however, I will separate myself from the organizations that I am linked with as these thoughts are mine alone and are not reflective of my affiliations.

Patient Safety has always been a key responsibility that I hold myself accountable for as a healthcare leader. I am proud to have worked with the Alberta Health Services Quality/Safety Education Team to create this video to emphasize with our new hires that patient safety is the responsibility of everyone.

I have progressive leadership experience throughout the health care continuum. I have always been a pragmatic leader and I know that my success is determined by a team that is driven and able to think outside the box. This team can only be created when a culture of respect and appreciation is promoted.

I am a Registered Nurse with 10+ years of experience throughout the health care continuum. I started my health care career as a Food and Nutrition Services Aide and then worked as a Psychiatric Aide. During my 2nd year of my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, I started working as an Undergraduate Nursing Employee in acute stroke, stroke rehab, medicine, and geriatric psychiatry. When I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing I worked for a few years in geriatric psychiatry until I transitioned into case management. Case Management was an incredible opportunity for me to see how complex the health care system is and how every program needs to work seamlessly together to ensure that the patient receives the care that they need.

I was given the opportunity to work as a System Case Manager and I made it possible for patients to return home with added services from home care so that they can either be at home longer or wait at home for placement to a long term care, so that acute care beds are freed up. My biggest achievement as a System Case Manager was successfully helping a gentleman transition back to his own home from long term care, so that he can spend the remainder of his years with his dogs. It took months of rehab and home renovations, but the patient was determined and the patient was supportive to give him the best quality of life.

My interest in change management and health care delivery has led me to leadership. I initially worked as a Shift Unit Manager/Site Manager for one of the largest and busiest hospitals in Alberta, until I found my home as a Unit Manager on a Transition Unit.

I completed my Master of Nursing and wanted to explore other opportunities and have worked as an Assistant Lecturer with University of Alberta and I currently work as a Business Area Manager for Canada's leading patient support provider for specialty pharmaceuticals.
